Domaine Muller-Koeberlé: A Natural Wine Wonderland in Alsace

Alsace is a region renowned for its rich and diverse wine culture, where traditional grape varieties such as Riesling, Auxerrois, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Gewurztraminer and Muscat thrive on the slopes of the Vosges mountains. But among the many wineries that dot this picturesque landscape, there is one that stands out for its bold approach to natural winemaking: Domaine Muller-Koeberlé.

Domaine Muller-Koeberlé is a family estate that was established in 1961 by Eugène Muller in the village of Saint-Hippolyte, in the heart of Alsace. Today, the estate is run by David and his wife Marianne as fourth generation winemakers, who have taken the legacy to new heights. In 2012, David started transitioning to organic, later biodynamic and today he operates under Vin Méthode Nature certification, a label that guarantees minimal intervention in both the vineyard and the cellar.

The estate covers 27 hectares of vines, planted with the traditional Alsatian varietals. But what makes Domaine Muller-Koeberlé unique is not only the quality of its grapes, but also the way they are grown and vinified. David has a huge passion for agroforestry, a practice that encourages biodiversity and creates a symbiosis between the vines, the trees and the wildlife. He has planted around 6000 different trees and shrubs throughout his vineyards, creating a natural ecosystem that makes the vines stronger and more resilient.

In the cellar, David follows a no-intervention philosophy, where he lets nature do its work. He does not use any additives or chemicals, not even sulfur. He relies on indigenous yeasts for fermentation and does not filter or fine the wines. He believes that the best wines are made in the vineyard, not in the cellar, and his goal is to express the terroir and the personality of each grape variety in their wines.

The result is a range of wines that are fresh, elegant, vibrant and full of character. They reflect the granite soil of Saint-Hippolyte and the diversity of Alsace.
The labels are just as thrilling and exhilarating as the wines, thanks to the artwork done by friend and tattoo artist Jubsyking, who designed and realized the labels for each cuvée.
