Maurer Oszkár Kadarka 2024
Subotica, Serbia
Grown in the Subotica wine region in northern Serbia, this 2024 Kadarka is a raw expression of traditional winemaking on the Pannonian Plain.
Here, vineyards are rooted in deep, prehistoric sands left behind by a long-vanished sea. Oszkár Maurer cherishes this unique terroir through a radical, hands-off approach, tending “wild vines” that have been left unpruned for the last four years. This collision of historical sand soils and untamed viticulture sets the stage for a remarkable wine.
While Kadarka is traditionally known for a light, luminous ruby hue, this one sits beautifully in the glass with a deeper, more resolute purple core.
The nose is where the unpruned vines and the sandy soil achieve a sort of viticultural nuclear fusion, colliding to release a massive amount of aromatic energy.
Unpruned vines yield grapes with thicker, disease-resistant skins, allowing Maurer to push the harvest later. Aromatically, this translates to a profound, concentrated ripeness. Remarkably, though, the wine sacrifices absolutely none of its vitality; the fruit profile remains fresh, crisp, and alive—never once tipping into overripe or stewed territory.
The nose offers a deep, untamed bouquet of vibrant cherry, wild bramble, and fresh cranberry, backed by a savory, almost resinous wild-herb character, lifted by soaring high notes of wild rose and crushed violet, keeping the entire profile incredibly buoyant.
If the nose is a display of viticultural nuclear fusion, the palate is a masterclass in fluid dynamics. The promise of the aromatics is fully realized in a duet of intense fruitiness and beautiful acids, supported by a rich, dense mid-palate.
The tannins are undeniably present, but rather than creating harsh, astringent friction, they achieve a state of zero-drag viscosity, framing the wine with a velvety texture that glides effortlessly.
The aging in 500-liter old barrels allowed the wine to breathe and round out over 10 months without masking the pristine fruit behind oaky vanilla or toast. As the wine crosses the palate, the hallmark acidity of the Subotica sand asserts itself, cutting through the richness of the late-harvest fruit and leaving the mouth watering.
The Verdict
Maurer Oszkár’s 2024 Kadarka is a stunning study in contrasts. It embraces the wild, feral energy and deep concentration of unpruned vines, finding perfect harmony with the elegance, bright acidity, and floral lift naturally provided by sand soils. It is at once rustic and refined, a richer, weightier take on Kadarka that never loses its essential, joyful vibrancy. A remarkable expression of Serbian terroir.
