Sagmeister – Breton Cabernet Franc 2021
Serbia, Fruška Gora
Saluting from the sun-drenched south side of Fruška Gora, this Cabernet Franc from Erno Sagmeister is a compelling expression of both grape and terroir. Rooted in red clay and limestone soils, the vines benefit from the region’s unique microclimate, producing grapes with exceptional character.
An extended maceration of nearly two months, followed by 28 months in barrique, has imbued this wine with a complex and refined character. The wine is crafted from destemmed grapes, allowing for gentle extraction and optimal expression of fruit and tannin.
The wine presents a deep, ruby-red hue with garnet undertones. Its aromatic profile is both inviting and intriguing. Ripe red fruits such as succulent raspberry and juicy strawberry dominate, seamlessly interwoven with darker notes of black cherry, plum, and black mulberry. A distinctive vegetal character, reminiscent of freshly cut bell pepper and verdant green herbs, adds vibrancy and freshness. Underlying these elements are earthy undertones akin to damp forest floor and crushed graphite. The oak aging contributes subtle nuances of creamy vanilla, cedar spice, and toasted almond, further enriching the aromatic tapestry.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and structured, with a velvety texture. The tannins are ripe and integrated, providing a smooth yet firm foundation. Bright, crystalline acidity cuts through the richness, ensuring the wine’s freshness and vitality. The interplay of ripe fruit, vegetal notes, and oak influence creates a harmonious and satisfying taste experience. A lingering finish showcases notes of dried cranberry and tobacco leaf, with a subtle mineral quality that reflects the limestone-rich terroir.
