In Sancerre, the eastern part of the Loire valley, Sébastien Riffault makes one of the best Sauvignon Blanc wines by far.
His traditional, low intervention approach, late harvest in combination with noble rot that most of sancerre wine makers condemned, results in a wine with a truly unique profile.

The Akmèniné 2017 is a pure exploration of flavours.
Aromatic, complex with notes of yellow apple, lime, pear and a light hint of caramel. It has a faint oxidative touch alongside a beautiful salty minerality.
You would expect that its delightful color and great concentration is due to skin contact but Akmèniné is direct press wine - no skin contact.
Magic happens in late summer, beginning of autumn when fungus Botrytis Cinerea infects the grape berries. Degradation of the wax layer on the grape skin creates small holes from which water escapes. The grape shrivels to about half its weight, resulting in a higher concentration of acids and sugars. Wine made of this grape will carry clearly noticeable notes of soft stone fruit, orange, honey, tea and christmas spices.
Skill determines the right moment to harvest, waiting too long can destroy crops leaving you with a whole lot of rotten grapes. Work in the cellar is also risky, high sugar concentration will take much longer to ferment into dry wine, exposing the wine in the meantime to oxidation but not too much, otherwise the mighty juice could end up in vinegar instead of wine.
Having all this in mind we can say that Sébastien mastered risk management.
This wine is truly remarkable and uplifting.

Wat een leuke ontdekking deze nieuwe wijnwinkel in de Pijp! Veel interessante wijnen waarvan ik er meerdere mocht proeven. En een zeer betrokken eigenaar die me van alles en nog wat vertelde over zijn wijnen. We komen snel terug!
